Meet Matt Hockenson!

Since being hired in 2021 as the Head Tennis Professional and Director of Tennis at West Hills Tennis and Pickleball Center in Owatonna, I’ve been grateful for the tremendous support from the community. After 3.75 years in this role, I’ve made the decision to step away from the management side of my position. As of January 1, 2025, I will no longer be working for the City of Owatonna, as the Director role will be absorbed by the City.

However, I am excited to announce that I have gained ownership of the youth tennis program we started in 2021 and have rebranded it as NXT Point Tennis & Pickleball, LLC. I’ve signed a rental agreement with the City of Owatonna, allowing me to continue using the West Hills Tennis Center to offer the same programming as before with very similar pricing.

My new focus will be running NXT Point Tennis & Pickleball, LLC while continuing my role as Head Tennis Coach for the Minnesota State Mavericks Tennis Team. I look forward to strengthening ties between our youth players and the MSU tennis program through special events and matches, including hosting matches at West Hills. Additionally, I’ve secured tournaments and agreements to provide competitive opportunities for our Intermediate and Advanced players, including UTR and USTA events.

I am a Tennis Professional who has been coaching tennis since the age of 15 in my hometown of Bemidji, Minnesota. Growing up, I was a two-sport athlete, playing football from 3rd grade through 9th grade before focusing solely on tennis from 10th-12th grade. As a tennis player, I was a 5-year Varsity Tennis player at Bemidji High School, playing #1 Singles from my sophomore through senior year. I also competed in numerous 16U & 18U tournaments in the USTA Northern Junior system and was ranked as a 1-2 star recruit, finishing #744 nationally and #20 in Minnesota for the 2015 class.

I went on to play Division I college tennis in the Big Sky Conference at The University of North Dakota (2015-2018) under Head Coaches Tom Wynne & Kyle Anderson. At UND, I played #6-7 Singles and #2-3 Doubles. I served as the Men’s Tennis Team Captain for the 2017-2018 season and was also a SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) representative for the team. I was named to the UND Athletic Academic Honor Roll each year I was on the team. For the 2018-2019 season, I served as the Volunteer Assistant Tennis Coach for the University of North Dakota’s Men’s and Women’s tennis programs. After earning my degree in Communication at UND, I played a fifth year of collegiate tennis as a Graduate Transfer at Division II Augustana University (2019-2020) under Head Coach Marc Kurtz and began pursuing a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration.

Now, I am completing my Master’s Degree in Sport Management online through Minnesota State University, Mankato. In my free time, I enjoy golfing, playing in tennis tournaments, and fishing. I am thrilled to embark on this next chapter and can’t wait to see what we accomplish together in growing the tennis community in Owatonna and beyond!
