Meet Matt Hokanson!

I am a Tennis Professional who has been coaching tennis since the age of 15 in my hometown of Bemidji, Minnesota. This past fall, I served as the Assistant Varsity Tennis Coach for the Bemidji High School Girls
Tennis team who went on to win the Section 8AA Section Championship. Growing up, I was a two-sport athlete. I played football from 3rd grade through my 9th grade year, and then played only tennis from 10th-12th grade. As a tennis player, I was a 5-year Varsity Tennis player at Bemidji High School in Bemidji, Minnesota. While on the Varsity tennis team, I played #1 Singles from my Sophomore year through my Senior year. I also played numerous 16U & 18U tournaments in the USTA Northern Junior system. I bounced between a 1-2 star recruit in high school and finished ranked as the #744 ranked player in the United States and 20 in Minnesota for the 2015 class.

I went on to play Division I college tennis in the Big Sky Conference at The University of North Dakota (2015-2018) under Head Coaches Tom Wynne & Kyle Anderson. While at North Dakota, I played #6-7 Singles, and 2-3 Doubles. I was selected as UND Men’s Tennis Team Captain for the 2017-2018 season, and I was also a SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) representative for UND Men’s Tennis. I was named to the UND Athletic Academic Honor Roll each year I was on the team. For the 2018-2019 season, I served as the Volunteer Assistant Tennis Coach for the University of North Dakota Men’s and Women’s tennis programs. After graduating from UND with a degree in Communication, I played a 5th-year of tennis as a Graduate Transfer at Division II Augustana University (2019-2020) under Head Coach Marc Kurtz. While at AU, I started a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration.

Now, I am finishing my Master’s Degree online through Minnesota State University, Mankato in
Sport Management. In my free time, I enjoy golfing, playing in tennis tournaments and fishing. I am excited for this opportunity to grow tennis here in Owatonna and the surrounding communities for players of all ages and abilities.
